Supporting Lambton Shores Since November 2021
Up until July 1, 2021 Lioness Clubs were part of Lions Club International, which is the largest service organization in the world.
Lioness Clubs began in America and was formed as a result of the success of auxiliary clubs that had started for the wives of the all-male Lions Clubs. The Lioness emblem and name were approved in 1975 and membership was open to any lady over the age of 18, whether they were married to a Lion or not. To be recognized a Lioness Club required a sponsorship from a Lions Club and although separate to run their own affairs and events they remained under the umbrella of Lions Club International.
Times change and membership in the Lions organization has dwindled a bit over the years forcing the organization to find new ways to help bolster membership including in 1987 opening membership to both men and woman. Two years ago they took another step that effectively discontinued their Lioness program as of July 1, 2021. Members of the Ladies organizations were given the option of disbanding their club, joining a Lions Club or going independent under a new name.
The option to go the independent route was chosen by many Lioness clubs across the province and the Swans Club is the result. A provincial organization was formed called Swans Ontario that will act as the governing body for the newly named service club.
Swans clubs can be found throughout Canada and internationally.
